CHULA VISTA (3-26-16) — What a difference 24 hours makes. On Thursday (Mar. 24) Southwestern College doubled up 8th ranked Grossmont College 10-5. Friday (Mar. 25) saw a pitcher’s duel break out at The Junction.
Grossmont (17-7, 10-2 PCAC) bounced back and took a 1-0 victory over the Jaguars (10-12, 7-5 PCAC) in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game.
There were a total of 12 hits by both teams, but the only one that really mattered was the solo shot that NOAH STROHL (La Jolla) launched in the fourth.
DONAVON McCRYSTAL (4-0, West Hills) went seven innings to gain the victory on the mound while allowing just four hits. He got the same amount of strike outs as hits and walked one. AARON CROSS (sv 4, Mater Dei (Orange Co.)) came in and got the six-out save and gave up two hits while getting a pair of strikeouts.
RAY PETERSON (Helix) had a game-high two hits in the leadoff spot for the Jaguars.
The Griffins will take on Mesa (8-15, 4-8 PCAC) next week with games at Mesa on Tuesday and Friday, while the teams will play at Noel Michelsen Field on Thursday (Mar. 31). All three games will begin at 2:00 p.m.
Looking at the standings halfway through the PCAC schedule, the Griffins have a 1.5 game lead on Mt. San Jacinto (11-10, 7-2 PCAC). Palomar (12-11, 7-4 PCAC) is 2.5 games back. Southwestern after losing the series this week is three games back.
The bottom of the standings has San Diego City (8-9, 3-5 PCAC) sitting five games back. Mesa is second to last and Imperial Valley (4-20, 0-12 PCAC) is bringing up the rear ten games back.
If the season continues the way that it has so far, the final series for the Griffins will be the difference in winning conference. That final series is against the Eagles of Mt. San Jacinto. In the Griffins favor is that two of those three games are at Noel Mickelsen Field.
