EL CAJON (3-20-16) — The fourteenth ranked Grossmont College Griffins played host to the Chaffey College Panthers in a non-league doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 19) and left the field with a pair of victories in walk-off fashion.
Grossmont (18-7-1), which is also the seventh best team in Southern California, took game one 6-4 on a RACHELL EVERETT (Bonita Vista) walk-off home run, her first of the year, to guarantee the Griffins of a split.
In the second game of the day, Everett started things off with a triple to right field to in the fourth inning. She scored on an error by the catcher to break the scoring open.
In the top of the sixth, Chaffey (18-6-1) scored three times all coming by way of Mariah Bisaillon homered (1st) to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
The Panthers, the leaders of the Foothill Conference, tacked on another run in the top of the seventh for a 4-1 lead.
Eventful would be one way to describe the bottom of the seventh inning.
The frame began with JESSICA RUBIO (Patrick Henry) legged out a single by beating the throw from the shortstop. ARISA ROSADO (Olympian) grounded into a fielder’s choice that claimed Rubio at second. After a ground out that moved Rosado to second the real fun began as the Griffins had their collective backs to the wall.
Everett singled advancing Rosado to third. KRISTEN ARMSTRONG (Granite Hills) pinch ran for Everett at first. SIERRA SAHAGUN (Heritage Christian) walked to load the bases up. MACKENSIE REYNOLDS (Santana) singled to right to keep the marry-go-round effect going, bringing in Rosado. ALEXIS FLORES (Calexico) reached on an error, something the Panthers were guilty of five times, moving everyone up 60 feet. A wild pitch moved everyone up another base, allowing Armstrong to touch home plate. DIAMOND MEJIA (West Ranch) singled to left scoring Reynolds and a 5-4 victory for the Green and Gold.
The Griffins will play their make-up double header against No. 2 Cypress (18-2) on Monday (Mar. 21). First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
