EL CAJON (3-17-16) — The Palomar Comets who came into the Wednesday (Mar. 16) PCAC conference tilt with Grossmont ranked in the top three for the state, used a barrage of offense to take the 10-2 victory in five innings.
Palomar in the first three innings took full advantage of their opportunities to score seven runs on 11 hits and also took advantage of four Griffin miscues as well. After three innings, the Comets led 7-0.
Grossmont would finally break through as they scored a run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a solo homer by RACHEL EVERETT (Bonita Vista) to make it 6-1.
Unfortunately for the Griffins, the Comets were just too much as they added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 10-1.
Grossmont would add another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as SOPHIA SAHAGUN (Christian Heritage) and NICOLE MEJIA (West Ranch High) both drew walks to give the Griffins runners at first and second. The next batter ALEXIS FLORES (Calexico High) was able to rip one to right center field for a single that scored Sahagun to make the score 10-2. Unfortunately that would be all the runs the Griffins would garner as Palomar was able to get out of the jam to end the game.
It just wasn’t the Griffins’ day offensively as they were limited to only four hits on the day while Palomar banged out 14 hits.
Taking the circle for the Griffins was ASHLEY MADARA (Valhalla) who just didn’t have any luck as she only lasted 2 1/3 innings, gave up 6 runs of which all were earned on 9 hits and would strike out one. RACHEL EVERRETT who would come in to relieve wouldn’t have any better luck as she tossed 2 2/3 innings, giving up 4 runs of which 3 were earned on 5 hits.
