LONG BEACH (3-10-16) — Baseball team executives like to look at the “Last 10” record to see how the team is doing. Well, on the college level those executives would be the athletic director, deans of departments and the school presidents. Regardless of who the executives are it is always good to see 10-0 in that column.
The No. 10 Grossmont College Griffins (12-5) ran their win streak to 11 games when they defeated No. 16 Long Beach City College (9-7) by a 6-2 score at Joe Hicks Memorial Field on Wednesday (Mar. 9) in a non-conference contest.
A trio of Granite Hills alums MICHAEL DIFFLEY, JUSTIN MITCHELL and ROBERT BOSTEDT along with La Jolla alum NOAH STROHL each had a multi-hit game in Southern Los Angeles County.
CRAIG GRUBBE (3-2, University City) went eight solid innings allowing six hits and a pair of walks, while striking out eight. This was a much different situation from a month ago when Grubbe allowed seven earned runs in three and two-thirds innings at Noel Mickelsen Field. Since that outing a month ago, the sophomore is on a three game personal win streak.
Long Beach got on the board first with a single run in the bottom of the first.
The Griffins bounced back in the top of the second. TRAVOR BEARD (San Clemente) walked to begin the frame. Mitchell doubled to left field allowing Beard to come all the way around to score and tie the game up at 1. After a fly out, CABOT VAN TIL (Patrick Henry) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Diffley got his first hit of the day to load the bases up. Bostedt got an RBI when he grounded a ball to the shortstop who tried to turn a double play, but Bostedt beat out the throw allowing Mitchell’s run to count and a 2-1 lead.
That is how the game stood for three innings. Both teams put a tally on the board in the sixth. Beard scored on a balk after getting on via a fielding error. Long Beach used the long ball to put their run on the board.
In the seventh, Bostedt singled to left. TANNER PERRY (Steele Canyon) also singled to left and both runners advanced a base on a passed ball. Strohl launched a 1-2 fastball high into the left field sky for a three run home run and a 6-2 Griffin lead.
The first place Griffins (5-0) will resume Pacific Coast Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday (Mar. 12) when they travel to Hemet to take on second place Mt. San Jacinto (7-9, 3-1 PCAC). Grossmont is on an eight game conference winning streak dating back to last season.
