SAN DIEGO (3-10-16) — The ninth-ranked Grossmont College Griffin softball team moved their game from El Cajon to Downtown San Diego due to wet grounds. The move didn’t make much difference as the Griffins still downed San Diego City College 9-4 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference contest at Betty Hock Field.
Grossmont (15-6-1, 4-2 PCAC) is in second place in the PCAC two games behind Palomar College after one round of the conference season. AMANDA IZZO (Hemet) and JESSICA RUBIO (Patrick Henry) both had three hit attacks as the Griffins totaled 14 total hits.
ASHLEY MADARA (5-4, Valhalla) got the win allowing just three hits, a walk and a run over four innings of relief action.
Izzo singled up the middle to get the game underway. She then saw an opening and stole second, her 17th theft of the year. The freshman tagged up and moved to third on a fly out. RACHEL EVERETT (Bonita Vista) laid a bunt down the first base line that she beat out and Izzo scored for a 1-0 Griffin lead. SIERRA SALAZAR (Helix) singled to center field moving Everett to second. ARISA ROSADO (Olympian) got on via a fielder’s choice that eliminated Everett from the equation and put runners on first and second. MacKENSIE REYNOLDS (Santana) singled to right ushering in Salazar and putting Rosado on third for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, City (10-13, 1-5 PCAC) put a single run on the board.
With one out in the top of the second, Rubio singled to center and then took her fifth stolen base of the season. Three consecutive hits by the Griffins lead to three runs and a 5-1 lead. After a pitching change and an out, Rosado singled to right and brought in Everett who had doubled prior to the pitching change. Izzo and KATIE SCHMIDT (Valhalla) also contributed to the rally with singles.
City used a bases loaded walk to put their run up in the second and cut into the Griffins lead, that stood at 6-2 after two innings.
City put another run up in the third to make it 6-3. That is where the score stood until the seventh inning.
Rosado led off the final frame with a double to left field. KIANNA INDIAN (San Dieguito Academy) reached on an error by the Knights pitcher on a sacrifice bunt. The error allowed Rosado to score. After settling down the Knights pitcher got two outs. Rubio coaxed a walk to move Indian to second. Izzo singled to shortstop, but ended up on third at the end of the play due to a two base error. The error allowed Rubio and Indian to score to make it 9-3 Griffins.
The Knights would get a run in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 9-4.
Orange Empire Conference member Cypress (13-1, 7-0 OEC) will make the drive down the I-5 South to play the Griffins in a doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 12). In the most recent rankings that are available (new rankings are due out today (Mar. 10)) Cypress was third in Southern California and fourth in the State.
