EL CAJON (3-6-16) — Some people in the state are looking at the CCCAA softball standings and are saying “What is wrong with Saddleback College? They usually have a much better record than 8-8.”
Grossmont College (14-6-1) has been on the bad end of two of Saddleback’s eight wins this season, the most recent being on Saturday (Mar. 5) as the Gauchos came south and took home a 2-1 victory.
AMANDA IZZO (Hemet), KATIE SCHMIDT (Valhalla) and RACHEL EVERETT (Bonita Vista) combined for two-thirds of the Griffins hits on the day as they each had two.
Izzo specifically had a fine day at the park. She got her two hits in four at bats, scored a run and stole two bases.
ASHLEY MADARA (4-4, Valhalla) was the tough luck loser in the game as she had a quality game throwing all seven innings. Over the seven innings, she allowed seven hits and only two earned runs while striking out three batters. The unfortunate part was that one of those hits left the park with a runner on in the fourth inning.
The Griffins had runners on in the sixth but couldn’t cash in on the opportunity.
In the seventh, Izzo singled and stole second. After a fly out, Everett singled moving Izzo to third. Everett then felt feisty and stole second herself, putting runners on second and third with one out. SIERRA SALAZAR (Heix) grounded out to second allowing Izzo to score and Everett to move to third. But that is where the rally and game would end as the next batter hit a pop out to the catcher.
The Green and Gold will resume Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (Mar. 9) when San Diego City College (10-12, 1-4 PCAC) come to Grossmont (3-2 PCAC, 2 games behind Palomar) for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
