EL CAJON (3-2-16) — When things go right for the Grossmont College Griffin baseball team, they go really good. Like 15 runs good. The 20th ranked Griffins took down the Southwestern College Jaguars 15-2 on Tuesday (Mar. 1) afternoon at Noel Mickelsen Field in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game to move their win streak to seven.
The seven game win streak is tied for the longest current win streak (San Joaquin Delta) in the State. Cosumnes River has a 12 gamer going.
Both teams had plenty of opportunities to get runners across the plate. Southwestern (4-8, 1-1 PCAC) knocked Griffin (8-5, 2-0 PCAC) pitching around for 11 hits. But on the other hand, Grossmont had 19 hits including five multi-base hits, Southwestern’s were all singles. TANNER PERRY (Steele Canyon) and JUSTIN MITCHELL (Granite Hills) both had four hits on the day, with Mitchell doing his in four at bats.
“We are really hitting on all cylinders right now,” Grossmont head coach RANDY ABSHIER said afterwards.
Another area that many folks factored into was pitching. Nine pitchers threw for the Jaguars, while the Griffins went seven deep in their pitching corps. The longest any of the Jag pitchers went was the starting pitcher when he threw two full innings. ALAN STRONG (4-0, Santana) went 5 1-3 innings before the Griffin ‘pen was called upon.
ROBERT BOSTEDT (Granite Hills) singled through the right side to begin the game for Grossmont. Bostedt stole second base and when the ball sailed into centerfield he advanced to third. Perry singled through the right side to usher home Bostedt for the first run of the day.
In the second, Mitchell singled to right field to lead off the inning. ANDRES RIOS (Mater Dei, San Diego) singled through the left side to move Mitchell to second. After a fly out, and another fly out that allowed Mitchell to tag and move to third, Bostedt singled through the left side for an RBI. Perry followed that with another single through the left side that Rios did a great job avoiding the ball when it was going by him. NOAH STROHL (La Jolla) doubled to right center clearing the bases for a 5-0 Griffin lead.
TRAVOR BEARD (San Clemente) walked to begin the third. Mitchell hit a no-doubt about it home run to right field, and not to the “jet stream” area in right center, for a touchdown lead. Rios followed that with a walk to get the motor running again. After a strikeout, Rios moved up on a wild pitch. MICHAEL DIFFLEY (Granite Hills) doubled through the left side to bring in Rios. Bostedt had a productive out as he advanced Diffley to third on a ground out. Perry then said to Mitchell “whatever you can do, I can do!” Perry registered his fourth home run, while it was Mitchell’s first home run of the season.
Southwestern finally got on the board when KRIS AGUILAR (West Hills) scored when Anthony Llamas’ single through the left side with two outs to close the score to 10-1 Grossmont going to the middle of the fourth inning.
Two innings later, SWC got an unearned run for a 10-2 Griffin lead.
Things were quiet until the eighth inning.
The Griffins burst the door open on the game with five runs to make it 15-2 Griffins. Three straight singles for Perry, Strohl and JUSTIN BURKEY (San Pasqual) drove in four runs between them.
Grossmont will continue the home stand on Thursday (Mar. 3) when San Diego Mesa (5-8, 1-1 PCAC) comes to El Cajon for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch. Grossmont is alone in first with Mt. San Jacinto (5-8, 1-0 PCAC) a half-game behind.
