RANCHO CUCAMONGA (2-24-16) — ALAN STRONG threw seven strong innings in the #20 (Southern California) Grossmont College Griffins victory over #17 (Southern California) Chaffey College Panthers 8-1 at Lowder Field in Rancho Cucamonga in a non-conference game.
Strong (2-0, Santana) struck out eight while allowing only one free pass and five hits. TANNER PERRY (Steele Canyon) had a game-high three hits to pace the Griffins (5-5) offense.
Grossmont got things going in the top of the first when with two outs, NOAH STROHL (La Jolla) was hit by a pitch. JUSTIN MITCHELL (Granite Hills) doubled to bring in Strohl for a 1-0 lead.
Chaffey tied things up in the bottom of the first with only one hit. With one out, Palmer singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Riley hit a sacrifice fly to left field to allow Palmer to tag and score.
With two outs in the second inning, Grossmont got back to work. CURRAN FACER (El Capitan) doubled and was followed by SEAN CROSBY (Valhalla) who singled allowing Facer to move to third. ROBERT BOSTEDT (Granite Hills) singled to bring in both runners for a 3-1 Griffin lead.
Perry homered to right centerfield for the second time this season and a 4-1 lead.
The sixth inning saw JUSTEN BURKEY (San Pasqual) lead off with a double to get things underway. ANDRES RIOS (Mater Dei, San Diego) singled to bring Burkey home and a 5-1 advantage.
The seventh inning was where the Griffins blew the doors off the game. Bostedt singled to begin the frame. Perry singled to wrap Bostedt over to third. Strohl walked to load the bases. Mitchell reached on a fielder’s choice when the Panthers attempted to turn a double play that claimed Strohl as a victim, but allowed Bostedt to score the first run of the inning.
TRAVOR BEARD (San Clemente) hit a ground ball that ricocheted off the pitcher to the second baseman who threw over to first. Mitchell moved to second and Perry scored. Burkey reached on an error by the shortstop, with Mitchell going to third. Rios reached when the center fielder dropped a fly ball allowing Burkey to move to third and Mitchell to score the 8th run of the day for the Green and Gold.
Grossmont will travel to West Los Angeles (5-6, which includes a shutout by Grossmont this past Saturday) on Thursday (Feb. 25) for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
