EL CAJON (2-17-16) — The Grossmont College softball team opened the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference season with a victory over Southwestern College 4-0 on Tuesday (Feb. 16) at GrossmontCollege.
ASHLEY MADERA (W, 3-1, Valhalla) threw an eight hit, five strikeout shutout to power the Griffins’ (10-2-1, 1-0 PCAC) victory.
ARISA ROSADO (Olympian) led the offense with her two hits, as the team got seven hits and evenly spread it around.
Southwestern (3-4, 0-1 PCAC) out-hit the Griffins but the Griffins were able to combine three walks and some clutch hits to get a few runs across the plate.
Grossmont got on the board in the third. With two outs, KATIE SCHMIDT (Valhalla) drew a walk. RACHEL EVERETT (Bonita Vista) drove her in with a double to right centerfield to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, the Green and Gold had a good inning. Rosado doubled to left centerfield to lead the inning off. ALEXIS FLORES (Calexico) pinch ran for the second baseman and advanced to third on a passed ball. JESSICA RUBIO (Patrick Henry) singled to the shortstop to allow Flores to come plate ward for a 2-0 lead. Rubio then stole second, her second on the season. A wild pitch moved Rubio to third before AMANDA IZZO (Hemet) knocked her in with a single for a 3-0 advantage. Izzo then registered her ninth stolen base (tied for sixth in the state) of the campaign. Schmidt laid down a sacrifice for the first out of the inning, moving Izzo to third. Everett had a “productive out” as Izzo scored on her groundout to shortstop for the fourth and eventually final run of the day.
Grossmont will travel to San Marcos to take on Palomar College (7-1, opens PCAC today at Mt.San Jacinto) on Friday (Feb. 19) for what could be the first of three big games. Mt. San Antonio will come to Grossmont on Saturday (Feb. 20).
