SANTA ANA (2-3-16) — Showing a flair for the dramatics to start the season, the Santa Ana College Dons (2-0) used a late rally for the second-straight game to pick up a 10-8 win over Grossmont College (0-1) on Tuesday (Feb. 2) in the Griffins’ season opener.
The Griffins built a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Santa Ana came back with three – all solo home runs – in the bottom of the seventh and took the lead with four in the bottom of the eighth.
TANNER PERRY slugged three doubles for the Griffins, who outhit Santa Ana 14-11 in the game.
Griffins catcher TREVOR BEARD also had three hits. First baseman JUSTIN MITCHELL was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI for Grossmont. ANDRES RIOS was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Grossmont starter ALAN STRONG pitched six impressive innings, allowing only six hits and three runs while walking none and striking out six.
Next up for the Griffins is a trip to Riverside City College for a 2 p.m. non-conference encounter on Thursday (Feb. 4). Grossmont opens the home season hosting Chaffey on Saturday (Feb. 6) at noon on Noel Mickelsen Field.
