LA MESA (2-3-16) — In the final contest of first round play of league, the Mount Miguel Matadors visited the Helix Highlanders and were able to right the ship with a 69-47 Grossmont Hills League victory, Tuesday (Feb. 2).
The Matadors who were coming off a surprising league loss in their previous outing jumped out first and Helix tied it. It would be the closest the Highlanders would get in the contest as the Matadors ran away as they used a 13-2 run to lead 15-2 with about 3:58 left in the first quarter. Mount Miguel would lead 26-7 after one period of play.
The second quarter for both teams was pretty even but it didn’t matter as the Matadors took it 12-11 to lead comfortably 38-18 at the break. Pacing the Matadors was the trio of SATERA BATES who canned 12 points, while DESTINI ANDERSON scored 10 points and DANIELLE SIMMONS scored 8 in the half.
Another factor in the dominating half by the Matadors was the fact that they shot 15-30 from the field, including 3-5 from behind the arc while Helix only shot 7-26 and 1-7 from behind the arc.
The second half was more of the same as the Matadors outscored the Highlanders 41-29 in the second half. Mount Miguel for the night shot 26-56 from the field for 46 percent while they held the Highlanders to 19-52 for 36 percent from the field.
Pacing the Matador victory was Anderson who on the night punched in a double-double of 23 points including 4 treys and 10 rebounds, Bates who scored 22 points and dished out 8 assists while ROZLYN PIERCE canned 16 of her own.
Helix wasn’t without their scoring leaders as CAM OWENS cashed in with 15 points while her partner Simmons scored a double-double consisting of 19 points and 13 boards.
Mount Miguel on the night made sure there wasn’t a repeat of the previous contest.
“Tonight it was our defense which we worked on and when we are on defensively, our offense gets a jump start,” said Anderson. “Also it was a good way to rebound after a loss which should have never happened.”
Mt. Miguel: Destini Anderson 23 (10 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl, 4 blk), Satera Bates 22 (6 reb, 8 ast, 5 stl), Rozlyn Pierce 16 (6 reb, 1 ast, 3 blk), Amber Hard 4 (2 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl), Tiaja Bennett 2 (6 reb, 3 stl), Camara Douglas 2, Zaria Arline (4 reb), Michelle Corley (2 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl).
