EL CAJON (1-28-16) — “The first one is always the toughest,” Grossmont assistant coach KEVIN BUTTY said after the Griffins’ 66-46 victory over Miramar College on Wednesday (Jan. 27) at the Griffin Arena.
The Griffins (12-9, 1-2 PCAC North) led in nine of the 12 team stats in the victory. The only three stats that the Green and Gold trailed in were turnovers (18 to Miramar’s 17), points off turnovers (19 to Miramar’s 22) and points in the paint where Miramar outscored Grossmont 24-16.
Through the first six and three-quarter minutes of the game, the teams were trading baskets with neither team having more than a two-point advantage. It wasn’t until a KAELEN MITCHELL (Helix) 3-pointer at the 11:45 mark and a CORWIN FEERICK (University City) layup did either team really have control of the game. After that Mitchell three, the Griffins never trailed in the remaining 39 minutes and took charge of the game.
Three Griffins reached double-figures with REMY LAWYER (Gold Coast, Australia) having a team-high 15 points. Mitchell had 12, as did LEANDRE POWELL (Eastlake) who scored his dozen coming from off the bench. Powell had half of Grossmont’s 24 bench points, compared to Miramar’s seven.
Stefan Zivkovic led Miramar (9-13, 0-2 PCAC North) with a double-double of 19 points (game-high) and 10 rebounds.
Grossmont had a 13-rebound advantage over the Jets. In conjunction with that, the Griffins also had a six-point advantage (11-5) in second chance points.
Wednesday night was interesting in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference as the Griffins were the only PCAC home team (Imperial Valley, San Diego Mesa, Palomar and Grossmont) to win out of the four conference games that were played.
On Friday (Jan. 29), the Griffins will travel to take on cross-division matchup against San Diego Mesa at 5:00 p.m.
