EL CAJON (1-26-16) — When the storms came through San Diego and Imperial Counties on January 6, the Grossmont College women’s basketball team was scheduled to play host to Imperial Valley College. The Lady Arabs were not able to safely come West on Interstate 8 that afternoon due to the rains.
The two teams needed to make that game up prior to the beginning of the second round on Friday (Jan. 29). So since both teams had Monday (Jan. 25) off, ta da, a make-up date had been decided upon.
Three Griffins reached double figures courtesy of a fantastic fourth quarter in a 77-65 victory in the make-up game.
The Griffins (6-13, 3-3 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference) jumped out on top 9-2 behind three baskets and a 3-pointer by JOANNA DE LA CRUZ (El Cajon Valley) half way through the first quarter. IVC fought back to make it a three-point game at 9-6. To close out the quarter, it was back and forth between the two teams as it was 15-12 at the end of the first ten-minute segment.
“Tonight’s game was a whole bunch of ugly,” head coach KAREN CAIRES said after the game. “We need to slide our feet a little more.”
The second quarter was disastrously different for the Griffins. For the game, the Lady Arabs shot 40 free throws, 19 of them were in the second period. Conversely, Grossmont shot 19 free throws for the entire contest.
“With all of our injuries this year, our rotations are all messed up,” Caires said.
For the Griffins the second quarter also featured some sloppy guard play. Grossmont committed 19 turnovers in the first half, of which 12 came from guards. “We did a terrible job with our court vision as a team,” Caires confessed.
At the break IVC was ahead 34-30, with 16 of those 34 Lady Arabs points coming from the free throw line.
In the second half, the guards improved their play dramatically. “We made some adjustments and got them to buckle down,” Caires praised.
The Griffins fell behind by 10 points in the second quarter, but battled back to only trail by two possessions at the break. In the third quarter Grossmont went on a run early to tie the game up at 40 halfway through the third. Imperial Valley came right back and went on a 10-4 run to close out the quarter and start the fourth to take a 50-44 lead.
The Griffins had their second highest scoring quarter of the year with 33 points (36 at San Diego Mesa, Jan. 13, 2016).
CHRISTINA BARRAMEDA (Ramona) scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in the final quarter. De la Cruz was right there with Christina as she had eight in the quarter and 14 for the game. JAZMINE BRADLEY (Monte Vista) had nearly a third of her 20 points in the final quarter as well.
Grossmont will get back to the traditional Wednesday/Friday rotation with a game on Jan. 27 at San Diego City College at 5 p.m. Friday (Jan. 29) will see the Griffins travel out to the desert to take on Imperial Valley also at 5 p.m.
