SAN DIEGO (1-17-16) — In a contest that didn’t feature much offense, the Steele Canyon Cougars won a non-league road contest against the Southwest San Diego Raiders 25-14 Saturday (Jan. 15).
The Cougars who were coming off of a 40-point league victory the previous night were sluggish offensively the entire contest and it showed. Despite the slowness of the offense, the Cougars used their defensive prowess to make sure they gained the victory.
On the offensive end, ASHLEY TAVIZON led the Cougars with 14 points. MARIAH SMITH contributed on the defensive end swatting 4 shots, while MARIANNA MARTINEZ and MARIE ESTAVILLO each had 5 steals. Rebounding wise the Cougars were led by the trio of Martinez who grabbed 10 boards, while Jordan and Smith each pulled down 9 rebounds.
The Cougars led 13-9 at the break and would go on to hold the Raiders to 2 points in the third to lead 17-11.
“It wasn’t pretty offensively but I will take the W,” said Cougars coach PETER RUIZ. “Now we will get ready and prepare for our next league contest against Valhalla.”
Steele Canyon: Ashley Tavizon 14 (3 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl), Marianna Martinez 6 (10 reb, 5 stl), Mariah Smith 5 (9 reb, 1 stl, 4 blk), Reagan Jordan (9 reb, 3 stl, 1 ast), Marie Estavillo (3 reb, 3 ast, 5 stl), Elizabeth Bott (2 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl).
