SPRING VALLEY (1-16-16) — The Mount Miguel Matadors could not find a way to solve the deliveries of El Capitan sharpshooter KADE KYGAR in Friday’s (Jan. 15) Grossmont Valley League opener at Mount Miguel.
Kygar scored 38 points, which is more than half the total cranked out by the Vaqueros who claimed a 58-54 victory over the Matadors.
As hot as Kygar was on this night, his effort was one point less than the 39 points he generated against Crawford last month.
“Honestly I don’t care how many points I score as long as we come away with a win,” said the 6-foot Kygar. “I just do what we need to do to win.”
Kygar nailed 8 three-pointers and was 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Equally as impressive he was 11-for-22 from the field and 8 of 14 from long distance. His stats are personal, Kygar noted. Wins are for the team.
It seemed like whatever Kygar attempted he was successful at executing.
“I’ve never seen back-to-back 4-point plays, like Kygar got,” said Matadors coach JAY ROWLETT. “When you start giving away points like that it’s going to be a looong season.”
With the game 42-all the Vaqueros forged in front on a 3-point bucket by Mount Miguel’s TAJ TUCKER. El Capitan (7-10, 1-0 GVL) came scrapping back, and Kygar executed a 4-point play to stake El Capitan to a 52-51 advantage.
The lead exchanged hands two times down the stretch with DARIAN NORWOOD dropping in a trey to bring the Matadors as close as 56-54.
Mount Miguel would eventually be eliminated when Kygar nailed a pair of free throws in the final 40 seconds.
DOMINIC IUDICIANI led the El Capitan supporting cast with 11 rebounds.
For Mount Miguel Norwood scored a team best 17 points, while MARQUIS NEAL added 14, and DEVON BROWN rolled a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Neal nailed 4 three-pointers for the Matadors (9-7, 0-1 GVL).
El Capitan: Kade Kygar 38 (7 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Donald Irvin 8 (5 reb, 2 stl), Devin Dulay 7 (2 reb), Dominic Iudiciani 5 (11 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Danny Estrada (6 reb, 2 stl), Zac Quintero (1 reb), Brendon Head (1 reb), Ren Neuhoff (1 reb).
Mount Miguel: Darian Norwood 17 (5 reb, 2 ast), Marquis Neal 14 ( 1 reb), Devon Brown 11 (10 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl, 3 blk), Taj Tucker 6 (6 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl), Trevon Allen 3 (3 reb, 1 ast), Chris Thompson 3 (2 reb), Andre Cox (1 ast), Trannell Hudson (1 ast).
