VISTA (1-10-16) — In the second annual SoCal Run ‘n’ Gun vs. Cancer event held at Rancho Buena Vista on Saturday (Jan. 9) SATERA BATES scored 24 points as Mount Miguel claimed a 67-50 victory over Westview.
Once the No. 6 ranked Matadors (11-5) found their groove they turned it into a 17 point win over the Wolverines (14-2). Mount Miguel’s victory snapped a 12-game winning streak for Westview.
The Matadors dedicated their triumph to former standout teammate GENEVIEVE COSTELLO who died from breast cancer at 26 in 2013. The team was wearing specially designed pink uniforms with Costello’s initials on the back with a pink ribbon.
“Playing in this game means something more to us because of Genevieve,” said Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL, who coached Costello as a Matador before she moved on to UC Davis.
DESTINI ANDERSON pumped in 16 points, while AMBER HARD contributed 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Mount Miguel broke the game open in the 3rd quarter with a 22-9 scoring run. Bates led the charge with 7 points, Hard added 6 and Anderson chipped in 5.
“It’s obvious we were able to pull away but we still haven’t reached our peak,” said Sandoval.
Mount Miguel: Satera Bates 24 (1 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Destini Anderson 16 (1 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Amber Hard 12 (6 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl, 1 blk), Laila Smith 8 (4 reb, 5 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk), Camara Douglas 6 (5 reb, 1 stl, 1 blk), Rozlyn Pierce 1 (7 reb), Michelle Corley (3 reb, 2 ast).
RAMONA 47, GRANITE HILLS 35 – Granite Hills’ offense misfired in the final period as the Bulldogs outscored the Eagles in Saturday’s (Jan. 9) finals of the Sweetwater Holiday Tournament.
“We got a lot of shots up but we didn’t get many to fall,” said Granite Hills coach CURTIS NORWOOD. “When the door isn’t open you have to knock it down. We were unable to do that. Our spirits got low and we wound up playing chase.”
MICAYELA HERNANDEZ and RAELLEAH MOORE both finished with double digit scoring, pouring in 11 and 10 points respectively.
Granite Hills: Micayela Hernandez 11, Raelleah Moore 10, Delaney Casey 5, Emma Kubari 4, Anyang Agoth 3, Kani Kubari 2.
HELIX 51, LINCOLN 45 – (Late report for this non-league game.)
Helix: Taylor Garrett 15, Camryn Owens 13 (3 ast), Danielle Simmons 9 (9 reb), Kaliah King 6 (2 reb, 2 ast), Marina Smith 2 (2 ast), Janae White 2 (5 reb), Olivia Missouria 2 (1 reb, 1 ast).
