SANTEE (1-7-16) — For the second year in a row, the Santana Sultans played the Crawford Colts, and this time it was the host Sultans coming out on the winning side, 55-49, in overtime on Wednesday (Jan. 6).
The first quarter, the Sultans came out on fire and dominated on both ends of the spectrum, limiting the Colts to 4 points while scoring 14. The Sultans continued their momentum in the second period as they would outscore Crawford 15-9 and lead 29-13 at the break.
Unfortunately for the Sultans the double digit lead wouldn’t last as Crawford turned the tables offensively as they were able to cut into the lead, outscoring the Sultans 14-9 to trail only 38-27 after three periods.
Now having cut into the large Santana lead, the Colts behind Daniel Davis and his 22 points blew by the Sultans in the final stanza to the tune of 18-7 to push the game into bonus ball with a score of 45-45.
Fortunately for Santana, which was led by floor general FRANKIE GUTIERREZ’s 13 points, MITCHELL MILLER who chipped in with 12 points and their teammate DAULTON BARRY who poured in 11 points, the Sultans were finally able to figure out the Colts and stun them and their momentum by outscoring them 10-4 in the bonus period.
Santana: Frankie Gutierrez 13 (8 reb, 4 ast, 4 stl), Mitchell Miller 12 (4 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Daulton Barry 11 (4 reb, 6 ast), Trent Baugh 7 (5 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk), Sage Hicks 6 (4 reb, 1 ast, 2 blk), Anthony Romero 4 (3 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl), Noah Nunez 2 (5 reb, 1 stl, 1 blk), Cooper Mendoza (1 ast).
