SAN YSIDRO (1-5-16) — JORDAN ELLIS came through in the clutch with 23 points, including 10-for-10 shooting from the free throw line to help carry the Valhalla Norsemen to a 70-65 quarterfinal victory over Bonita Vista in Monday’s (Jan. 4) San Ysidro Cougar Classic.
Ellis was on target from the free throw stripe with the game on the line in the fourth quarter.
As Valhalla sat on a 65-63 edge in the final minute Ellis nailed 5 consecutive free throws to give the Norsemen their 9th win in 14 decisions.
This was no solo act however, as COLE HENDERSON knocked down 19 points, collected 18 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.
NATHAN YOUSIF added 10 points, hitting 5 of 9 from the field. He also dished a team best 5 assists.
TREY SCHIMKE led the supporting cast with 10 points, including 4 of 5 free throw shooting and 2 steals.
As a team the Norsemen (9-5) nailed 20 of 26 charity shots thanks to 26 fouls by the Barons (7-5).
Valhalla will take on Calexico in the tournament semifinals Wednesday (Jan. 6) at San Ysidro at 4:30.
