SAN DIEGO (12-30-15) — The Monte Vista Monarchs snapped an 8-game losing streak as they clipped Clairemont 64-54 in Tuesday’s (Dec. 29) Montgomery Holiday Classic.

The Monarchs (3-10) were glad to welcome back DEONDRE McHAYLE who finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

“He’s a double-double machine,” said Monarchs coach MIKE TULLY. “Every time you see him you know what you’re gonna get. He comes ready to play.”

SHAI STEVENSON continued his hot hand as he tossed in 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to go along with 7 assists and 2 steals. He has scored 39 points and 28 rebounds in his last two games.

“Stevenson is playing the way we know he can,” said Tully. “He’s one of the key players to our team but we have other people who need to contribute and I expect them to do that in the next couple of games.”

TRE OWENS pitched in 13 points, while BO RANKINS added 12 for the Monarchs.

Monte Vista:  Shai Stevenson 17 (13 reb, 7 ast, 2 stl), Tre Owens 13 (4 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Deondre McHayle 13 (11 reb, 5 ast, 4 stl, 3 blk), Bo Rankins 12 (2 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Dylan Ayers 4 (2 reb), Adrian Bass 2 (3 stl), Kelton Vun 3, Tre Koita (3 reb).

GRANITE HILLS 57, BUHACH COLONY 53 (OT) – The desert air must be enticing to the Granite Hills basketball team as the Eagles have rolled up two straight victories, including Tuesdays’ (Dec. 29) 57-53 overtime knockout of Buhach Colony in the Las Vegas Invitational.

But it took the Eagles (6-5) an extra session to pull out the victory.

Featured in the overtime period was DAVID SETTERBERG, who landed a 3-pointer and a free throw over a 10 second stretch.

RYAN KELLY put the game away with a pair of free throws.

Setterberg finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

GROSSMONT 53, FALLBROOK 31 – The Foothillers will dribble into the championship villa after disposing of Fallbrook 53-31 in Tuesday’s (Dec. 29) Spartan Tournament in Chula Vista.

Once again the gleaming star was Grossmont’s 6-foot-10, UC Irvine bound TOMMY RUTHERFORD who racked up 25 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks.

The Foothillers outscored the Warriors across the board.

Grossmont will meet O’Farrell in the championship game Wednesday (Dec. 30) at Chula Vista High at 7 p.m.

HELIX 53, CERRITOS 48 – The Highlanders clobbered Cerritos on the boards in Tuesday’s (Dec. 28) Mt. Carmel Holiday Hoops Classic action.

The bottom line is the Highlanders dominated the boards for 44 caroms, led by JAYLEN ARNOLD and AMARI GREEN, who each had 11.

JUSTIN FLISHER swept the glass for 9 more rebounds.

It was an impressive performance for Helix (7-6) which won its last six games.

The Highlanders won the game in the fourth quarter, erasing a 44-41 deficit. Flisher led the rally with 8 points and Arnold added 6.

Helix:  Malik Tambwe 13 (3 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl, 2 blk), Justin Flisher 11 (9 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk), Jaylen Arnold 11 (11 reb, 5 ast, 1 stl, 3 blk),  Jamar Wynn 6 (6 reb, 3 ast), Amari Green 5 (11 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl), Isaiah Wooden 5 (1 reb, 2 ast, 1 blk), Dylan Lee 2 (3 reb, 1 ast).

MOUNTAIN VIEW CHRISTIAN 62, CHRISTIAN 47 – The Christian High Patriots had to spend most of Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 28) waiting to take to the court in the Las Vegas Invitational.

It wasn’t until 10 p.m. that there was an opening jump ball.

“I’m not sure what impact the late start had on us,” said Patriots assistant coach TIM BROWN. “We got a really good start to the game, and then they went on a big run. This was a winnable game for us but we couldn’t get any big flows going.”

TRAVIS BALLARD rolled a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds, while LAYNE LARSEN added 12.

Christian:  Travis Ballard 19 (13 reb, 1 stl, 2 blk), Layne Larsen 12 (2 reb), Dominic Safarta 8 (3 reb, 1 stl), David Todd Jeremiah 3 (4 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl), Kyle Stowers 2 (2 reb, 4 ast), Jacob Sandusky 2 (2 reb), Grant Taylor (2 reb), Garrett Nielsen (1 reb), Dominic Bristol (1 reb).

EL DORADO 63, STEELE CANYON 58 – MARCUS WHITE had 20 points and THOMAS FISHBURNE had 18 as the Cougars stumbled to El Dorado Placentia in Tuesday’s (Dec. 28) Mt. Carmel Holiday Hoops Classic.

The pivotal frame was the second when El Dorado outscored the Cougars 30-7.

“El Dorado hammered us from the free throw line,” said Steele Canyon coach DEREK STEPHENS.

El Dorado made 15 of 19 from the charity stripe, the majority coming in the fourth quarter when they connected on 10 of 12.

On the flip side the Cougars connected on only 14 of 29 shots from the stripe.

“There it is right there – plus we missed 4 layups and made only one 3-pointer,” Stephens said.

Steele Canyon cut it to 3 points with 45 seconds left.

“We had our chance right there but couldn’t get anything to drop,” the coach added.

Stephens, much like the majority of coaches, noticed the busy traffic of playing games and the limited number of practices.

“We played 10 games and had only one practice in between,” he said. “It’s kinda hard to make corrections under those conditions.”

Steele Canyon:  Marcus White 20, Thomas Fishburne 18, Nick Hodge 9, Gage Sanders 4, Javon Nutter 2, Tyler Smith 2, Kyree Woods 2.

SAN YSIDRO 63, MOUNT MIGUEL 49 – DARIAN NORWOOD, one of the East County leaders in double-doubles, poured in 28 points and yanked down 14 rebounds to lead Mount Miguel in Tuesday’s (Dec. 28) Montgomery Holiday Classic.

Trouble is, Norwood had little to no help. Case in point, only TREVON ALLEN pitched in 9 points and speared 7 rebounds in the losing effort.

“It was a lethargic game,” said Matadors coach JAY ROWLETT. “We didn’t play with the intensity that we did last night. It was ugly.”

“Norwood played hard. We have got to get a W tomorrow (Wednesday, Dec. 30 at Montgomery, 10:30 a.m.) so we can go into the new year right.”

Mount Miguel:  Darian Norwood 28 (14 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Trevon Allen 9 (7 reb, 1 stl), Taj Tucker 5 (5 ast, 1 stl), Marquis Neal 3 (2 reb, 1 stl), Chris Thompson 2 (2 reb), Justice Chima 4 (2 stl), Raymond Lucas (1 reb), Trannell Hudson (2 stl).

COLE HENDERSON paced the Norsemen (6-4) with 16 points including a pair of treys.

JORDAN ELLIS pitched in 14 points, while NATHAN YOUSIF and MATTHEW SAKO each added 11.

Valhalla:  Cole Henderson 16, Jordan Ellis 14, Nathan Yousif 11, Matthew Sako 11, John Murad 9.
