SAN DIEGO (12-30-15) — Grossmont College buried West Hills Coalinga with 10 free throws in overtime Tuesday (Dec. 29) to help propel the Griffins past the Falcons 70-64 to earn a championship berth in the San Diego Mesa College Holiday Inn Mission Valley Tournament.
The Griffins (9-4) will face East Los Angeles for the title at 3:30 p.m. at Mesa on Wednesday (Dec. 30).
MARCO MEZA nailed 4 free throws, DANIEL McCOWN hit 3 of 4 and KAELEN MITCHELL netted 3 more.
Grossmont tied the game in the final seconds of regulation 60-60 on a 3-pointer by McCown with 3 seconds left.
“It wasn’t like he just threw the ball at the basket,” said Griffins assistant coach JOHN CLARK. “It was a picturesque shot that tied the game. He got the ball kicked to him and he went to his right, then pulled up and swished it.”
McCown led the Grossmont offense with 17 points – the majority coming on four 3-pointers.
All 12 of Mitchell’s points were the result of treys.
CORWIN FEERICK chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds, while LUKE JACKSON contributed 11 points and 5 assists.
Meza turned in a solid performance with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
SPENCER VERING pitched in 9 points and LARRY STOKES added 9 more off the bench.
