SAN MARCOS (12-18-15) — The high-rolling West Hills Wolf Pack raced past host San Marcos in the East Division of the Winter Prep Classic 45-32 on Thursday night (Dec. 17) in North County.
The Wolf Pack (6-1) used a 17-9 scoring burst in the second quarter to take a 27-16 halftime lead.
“We started off slow offensively but picked it up the second quarter, finally got our post involved,” said West Hills coach RYAN KINSER. “We had another great defensive effort, girls are playing hard on that side of the ball.”
“Looks like we will be without our point guard tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 18), it’s going to be tough vs. Serra.”
KERRIE DANIELS nailed 5 of 10 shots from the floor to finish with a team best 11 points and 7 rebounds.
MAYA CLEMONS chalked up 8 points and 4 steals to head the West Hills’ supporting cast.
MEGAN SCOTT crashed the boards for 8 rebounds, dished 3 assists and notched 3 steals.
West Hills: Kerrie Daniels 11 (7 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk), Maya Clemons 8 (3 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl), Jessica Fondas 6 (4 reb, 3 stl), Clarrisa Holder 6 (5 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Carly Raley 5 (6 reb, 1 ast, 4 stl), Vivian Panella 5 (2 reb, 3 ast, 4 stl), Megan Scott 2 (8 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl), Aylssa Garcia 2.
CHRISTIAN 41, SAN DIEGO ACADEMY 36 – A 2-5 start to the season is a bit misleading to the kind of year Patriots’ coach TIFFANY GILES expects this year.
“We’ve lost three games by two or three points this year,” Giles said.
With a break here or there and less injuries, the Patriots could have easily reversed that mark.
BROOKE OWENS paced the Patriots with 21 points in the non-league victory over San Diego Academy.
MARISSA GILES contributed 17 points and 5 rebounds as the Patriots poured on the coal in the final period.
Christian trailed 28-22 after three quarters before putting together a 17-8 burst over the final eight minutes.
“We came out in the 2-3 zone and it quickly became apparent that their 3-point shooters were killing us,” said coach Giles. “In the second quarter we went to man and were able to shut down their perimeter shooters.”
What ultimately sealed the victory for Christian is when the Patriots went to a full court press in the final stanza.
Owens scored 9 points and Marissa Giles had 7 in the fourth quarter to seal the deal for Christian.
Christian: Brooke Owens 21 (1 reb, 1 ast), Marissa Giles 17 (5 reb, 2 ast, 2 blk, 2 stl), Jasmyn Crawford 2 (3 reb, 1 stl), Hayley Robinson 1 (5 reb, 2 stl), Alyssa Rothrock (4 reb), Sage Salacup (1 reb, 2 stl).
OTAY RANCH 60, HELIX 42 – The Helix Highlanders got off to a sluggish start and never recovered in Thursday’s (Dec. 17) Bishop’s West Division of the Winter Prep Classic.
Otay Ranch capitalized on the Highlanders’ lack of offensive punch, taking a 44-27 advantage after three periods.
Helix (1-7) attempted a belated comeback bid in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 15-6.
DANIELLE SIMMONS coined a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds for Helix. She hit the team’s only two 3-pointers on the night, although TAYLOR GARRETT pitched in 14 points.
Helix is hurting more than its record as they must play without point guard CAM OWENS, who suffered an ankle injury.
“It was a wonderful game but we’re rebuilding this year,” said Helix coach PATRICK TABOR. “We’ll be back.”
Helix: Danielle Simmons 17 (10 reb), Taylor Garrett 14, Kaliah King 6, Janae White 2 (3 reb), Olivia Missouria 2 , Jazmyne Turner 1 (2 reb).
