SAN DIEGO (12-17-15) — It was a frustrating night on Wednesday (Dec. 16) for all three East County entries that challenged the cold and losing efforts.
FRANCIS PARKER 81, MOUNT MIGUEL 67 – The Mount Miguel Matadors (4-2) took some of the chill off their play on the floor but came up short against 9thranked Francis Parker in The Bishop’s Winter Prep Classic.
No question, the Matadors have the offense as they proved once again, but their porous defense caused their record to drop to 4-2 against the Lancers.
Mount Miguel, which was led by TAJ TUCKER’s 21 points and a double-double by DARIAN NORWOOD of 17 points and 12 rebounds, wasn’t enough to pin Parker to the mat.
“We were in foul trouble the whole game,” said Mount Miguel coach JAY ROWLETT. “We were down 45-40 in the third quarter when Norwood fouled out. He was the third player to foul out for us.
“Despite all the problems we had in this game I thought our kids played hard and I can’t complain about their effort,” Rowlett added.
Mount Miguel will face Lincoln at Bishop’s Thursday (Wed. 17) at 7:30.
Mount Miguel: Taj Tucker 21 (2 reb, 8 ast, 1 stl), Darian Norwood 17 (12 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Trevon Allen 12 (6 reb, 1 stl), Trannell Hudson 7 (5 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Marquis Neal 5 (2 reb, 1 stl), Chris Thompson 3 (1 reb), Andre Cox 2 (1 reb), Justice Chima (2 reb, 1 ast), Raymond Lucas (2 reb).
MONTGOMERY 58, GRANITE HILLS 51 – The Granite Hills Eagles stumbled out of the gate at Montgomery in Wednesday’s (Dec. 16) non-league action, but finished strong, outscoring Montgomery 22-10 but it was too little, too late.
RYAN KELLY came up strong for Granite Hills with 21 points, which included 6-for-15 shooting from the floor and one trey to go along with 8-for-9 conversions at the free throw line. The 6-foot-7 junior had 8 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.
“We had a lot of turnovers,” noted Eagles coach RANDY ANDERSON. “We didn’t shoot well from the perimeter. We made a little comeback in the second half and showed some heart.”
DAVID SETTERBERG chipped in with 11 points and 5 rebounds for the Eagles.
Granite Hills: Ryan Kelly 21 (8 reb, 2 ast, 3 blk, 1 stl), David Setterberg 11 (5 reb, 4 stl, 2 blk), Darien Cassio 8 (4 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk), Cameron Spitzer 7 (4 reb, 2 ast), Jacob Burton 2 (6 reb, 1 blk), Dylan Garcia 2 (3 reb, 1 blk, 1 stl).
LA COSTA CANYON 72, WEST HILLS 36 – BRYCE PARSONS rolled a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to carry the Wolf Pack (4-2) past host La Costa Canyon ( in Wednesday’s (Dec. 16) North County Tournament action.
The Mavericks led 33-20 at halftime and broke the game open 54-26 by the close of the third period.
West Hills: Bryce Parsons 13 (11 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Miguel Nava 5 (1 reb, 1 blk), Chris Moyer 4 (3 reb), Caesar Curet 3 (1 reb, 1 stl), Cameron Barry 3 (1 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Marco Ovies 3 (1 reb, 2 ast), Kyle Ruiz 3 (1 reb, 1 stl), Nelson Zoree 1 (3 reb), Spencer Moyer 1 (2 reb), Marquell Cool (2 reb, 1 stl), Scott Wheeler (1 reb).
