CHULA VISTA (12-9-15) — Coach MIKE TULLY realizes his Monarchs will have to do some rebuilding this season but he’s pleased by their 2-2 start in the Hilltop Tournament.
“We played two Division III teams (Hilltop and Otay Ranch) and have done very well – beaten both,” Tully said. That would include Tuesday’s (Dec. 8) 59-42 romp over Otay Ranch.
Six-foot-1, 193-pound sophomore DEONDRE McHAYLE continues to impress for Monte Vista, pouring in 17 points and snaring 10 rebounds.
“He went to the basket and drew a lot of fouls,” Tully said.
McHayle converted 9 of 12 charity shots.
SHAI STEVENSON led Monte Vista’s supporting cast with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Mr. BO RANKINS added 11 points and 9 boards.
The Monarchs streaked to a 31-16 halftime lead.
“I thought we moved the ball around well but we’ve gotta get better on defense,” Tully said. “Holding them to 16 points in the first half is a posive sign. When you can do that you’re going to win a lot of game.”
Monte Vista: Deondre McHayle 17 (10 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Shai Stevenson 12 (11 reb, 3 ast, 4 stl, 2 blk), Bo Rankins 11 (9 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk), Tre Owens 8 (3 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Terry Bone 6 (5 reb, 2 stl), Kelton Vun 4 (1 reb, 1 stl), Adrian Bass 3 (2 reb).
VALHALLA 69, CLAIREMONT 52 – The Valhalla Norsemen were able to even their record at .500 as they rolled the host Clairemont Chieftains 69-52, Tuesday (Dec.8) in the Baron/Matador Classic.
The ever reliable scoring machine and also considered one of the best players in the county COLE HENDERSON led all scorers with 20 points.
No other Norseman reached double digits but it was a balanced effort as every player scored and NATHAN YOUSIF, TREY SCHIMKE and MATTHEW SAKO each drilled in 9 points apiece for Valhalla.
Valhalla: Cole Henderson 20, Matthew Sako 9, Nathan Yousif 9, Trey Schimke 9, John Murad 7, Kai Komaki 5, Danny Bender 4

The Eagles netted only 12 of 48 shots from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers and 2 of 5 free throws.
