EL CAJON (12-3-15) — The Granite Hills Eagles looked to get things going as they hosted the Hoover Cardinals, Tuesday (Dec. 2) in the Eagle Invitational. Unfortunately it just wasn’t their night as they dropped the decision 52-39.
Things looked good for the Eagles as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game. Granite Hills would lead 10-7 after the first quarter. Unfortunately they couldn’t maintain the momentum as the Cardinal were able to get back into it and knot the score at 10-10 only a couple of minutes in. Hoover would take their first lead of the game 13-12 at the 4:50 mark and lead from there on out and at the end of the second period they would lead 23-17.
The Eagles were able to make a mad flurry to pull within 9 points in the third period as they were able to tally 13 points in the period. After three periods of play it was 39-30 still in favor of the Cardinal. Both teams would go back and forth for the first couple of minutes of the final period as only one point was scored and that was by the Cardinal to push the lead to 40-30.
The Eagles were able to get within five points with about 4 minutes left in the game. Unfortunately their shooting woes would rear its ugly head again. The Cardinal would take advantage of the Eagles’ missed opportunities and stretch their lead from 5 to 9 points to take a 46-37 lead with almost 2 left in the game.
Leading the way for Granite Hills was RYAN KELLY who did his darndest to keep the Eagles alive as he cranked in a double-double with 12 points while grabbing 11 boards. His running mate JACOB BURTON was a monster on the boards as he corralled 18 rebounds and tossed in 8 points.
Granite Hills: Ryan Kelly 12 (11 reb, 4 stl), Cameron Spitzer 9 (5 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Jacob Burton 8 (18 reb, 1 ast), Jordan Rogers 3 (2 reb), Darien Cosio 3 (8 rebs, 2 stl), Wyatt Mason 2 (2 reb), Erin Swinson 2 (2 reb).
