SANTEE (12-2-15) — Opening night of a season is always exciting as it brings hope and also a new chapter. Excitement is what the host West Hills Wolf Pack provided its fans in the opening round of the Horsman Automotive Tournament Tuesday night (Dec. 1) as they soundly defeated Madison 85-55.
Both teams would entertain the crowd with their back-and-forth play but it would be the Wolf Pack who would lead 24-14 after the first quarter. West Hills in the second period would use stifling defense on the Warhawks which would allow them to start a scoring run. The scoring run for the Wolf Pack of 7-0 would see them build a 17 point lead, 31-14 with about five minutes to go in the half. The largest lead of the half would see the Wolf Pack lead 45-27 with about thirty seconds to go. Madison would score another basket but it would be West Hills taking the 45-30 lead into the locker room.
The second half was more of the same for the Wolf Pack as they would extend their lead to over 20 points. In fact they would build upon their largest lead which would end up at 27 points. Thanks to allowing only 11 points in the third period, the Wolf Pack led 68-41.
Leading the way for the Wolf Pack were a trio, CAMERON BARRY who tallied 19 points behind his hot shooting, finishing 7-11 from the field including 4-8 from behind the arc. His counterpart BRYCE PARSONS rolled out a double-double, punching in 16 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Their third partner, MARCO OVIES poured in 9 points and dished out 8 assists.
Behind an entire team effort, the Wolf Pack in the final period would push their lead to what would be the largest and ultimately the final of 30 points, thus giving the Wolf Pack the mark in the win column.
“It is always good to start the season right with a victory,” said West Hills head coach JEFF ARMSTRONG. “The kids played hard and it showed in their effort tonight.”.
