LA JOLLA – Andrew Higginson scored for Valhalla, as the Norsemen went ahead by a 6-3 count after three periods, and Jacob Camacho scored late in the third quarter for the winning margin, sending Valhalla to the San Diego CIF championship game with a semifinal win over Fallbrook.
Valhalla senior D.J. Avalle made 15 saves in Division I semifinals at La Jolla High on Wednesday.
Top-seeded Valhalla will play at 4:45 p.m. Saturday against No. 2 La Jolla at Coggin Center. The Vikings advanced by beatong Vista 7-6.
Avalle stopped a penalty shot in the first quarter then made three saves in the fourth period to hold on for the win.
Valhalla led 3-1 at halftime, then Fallbrook eventually closed to within one goal with 5:17 left in the fourth.
Camacho’s decisive goal came on a punch shot after he received a great deep pass from Reed Minter.
Coming up big defensively for Valhalla, especially in the fourth, were Spencer Nussbaum and Brandon Pesky.
