SAN DIEGO (11-15-15) — Grossmont College ran into a wall in Sunday’s (Nov. 15) San Diego City College Knights Invitational championship game against Mt. San Jacinto.
The Screamin’ Eagles (3-0) barged in front 49-30 in the first half and then cruised to a lop-sided 95-70 victory over the Griffins (3-3).
Only one Griffin reached double scoring digits, that being DANIEL McCOWN, who rang in 13. That includes 6 for 6 shooting from the free throw line.
The Grossmont bench contributed 43 points off the pine led by LARRY STOKES and DOMINIQUE WALKER, each with 9 points.
CORWIN FEERICK added 8 points and 5 rebounds, while REMY LAWYER chipped in with 6 points and 6 rebounds. SPENCER VERING nailed 5 of 6 free throws for 5 points.
It was an off night for the Griffins’ KAELEN MITCHELL, who came into the game averaging 21 ppg. He played only 10 minutes and finished with a season low 2 points.
Next up for the Griffins is the 44th Annual Grossmont Basketball Tournament. The Griffins will tip off against Santa Barbara City College at 6 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 4).
The tournament tips off at 2 p.m. with San Luis Obispo-Cuesta vs. San Diego City. At 4 p.m. it will be Cypress vs. West Los Angeles. The night cap features College of the Desert-Los Angeles Southwest at 8 p.m.
The tournament resumes on Saturday with games at 2, 4, 6, 8 p.m., and concludes with games on Sunday with games at 1, 3 and 5 p.m for the championship.
