CHICAGO (10-19-15) — University of San Diego quarterback ANTHONY LAWRENCE, a Grossmont High alum, has been named STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week after posting his first career 300-yard performance in a win over Drake University on Saturday (Oct. 17) at Acala Park.
Facing what has been one of the better Pioneer Football League defenses in recent years, Lawrence completed 22-of-33 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns. He threw a 16-yard TD pass to Jereke Armstrong as the first quarter ended and added a 62-yard score to Armstrong late in the third quarter. The scoring strikes raised his rookie season total to 12.
Lawrence is the third PFL player to receive STATS FCS National Player of the Week honors.
In six varsity games for the 4-2 Toreros Lawrence has completed 109 of 175 passes for 1232 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 39 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries.
