EL CAJON (10-18-15) — Saturdays usually create dozens of East County football heroes. One of the latest headliners was BYU junior and former Valhalla and Grossmont College standout is receiver NICK KURTZ.
The 6-foot-5, 205-pound junior made the biggest catch of his career this weekend as he took a 53-yard scoring strike with 8:14 remaining, giving the Cougars a 31-24 advantage they would not lose.
Kurtz finished with six receptions for 119 yards in BYU’s 38-24 victory at the University of Cincinnati. He has 23 catches for 354 yards and 2 scores – including an 18-harder for the first of his career for the Cougars (5-2).
- Redshirt freshman quarterback ANTHONY LAWRENCE passed for a career-best 326 yards and 2 touchdowns in leading the USD Toreros to a 27-0 Pioneer League victory over Drake University. The Grossmont High graduate clicked on 22 of 33 passes.
- Helix graduate JALEN DAVIS, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound sophomore corner, helped Utah State pull a major upset of Boise State 52-26. Davis racked up 7 tackles (4 solo), forced a fumble, intercepted a pass and had 2 pass breakups. Utah State snapped a 12-game losing streak to Boise.
- Oregon State freshman quarterback SETH COLLINS (Granite Hills) generated 300 total yards for the Beavers, but it was not enough to hold off Washington State as the Cougars prevailed 52-31. Collins completed 17 of 30 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 23 times for 124 yards.
- Former Helix receiver CAMERON LEE, 5-foot-11, 175-pounds) put together a classic game as he caught 5 passes for 127 yards, which breaks down to 25.4 yards per catch as the Peacocks of Upper Iowa University toppled the Winona University Warriors.
- XAVIER GOODLOE, a product of Steele Canyon, logged 6 tackles and forced a fumble in the New Mexico Mustangs loss to Colorado Mesa Mavericks. In six games Goodloe has 28 total tackles and 3 pass breakups.
- Colorado Mesa’s one-two punch of WILLIAM MILO (Helix) and wide receiver VIRNEL MOON (El Cajon Valley) helped the Mavericks (6-1) maul the Western New Mexico Mustangs 56-26. Milohad 3 tackles and a sack, while Moon caught 3 passes for 35 yards.
- Helix graduate ISAIAH YOUNG racked up 9 tackles for Southern Nazarene University Crimson Storm in Bethany, Okla. against South Oklahoma State.
- The Universityof Nevada-Reno senior defensive end IAN SEAU has 22 tackles, 6 for loss, 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Seau is a product of GrossmontCollege.
- Valhalla product JOHN TODD caught one pass for 50 yards in Humboldt State’s 35-10 loss to Midwestern State Universityin Wichita Falls, Texas.
- Defensive back KEITH RODGERS (Valhalla) notched 5 tackles and picked off a pass to help the University of Jamestown Jimmies edge Mayville North Carolina 17-7.
