Griffins come up well short against Gauchos

MISSION VIEJO (10-18-15) — The epitome of the last five games of the Grossmont College football season could be summed up by a 94-yard kickoff return by NEHEMIAH BROWN (Valhalla) in Saturday’s (Oct. 17) – it was ultimate frustration.

Despite Brown’s burst that carried the ball to the 4-yard line in Saddleback’s Snake Pit Stadium, the Griffins failed to score a point as they ran out of downs on that series.

It never got any better for the Griffins, who dropped a 32-12 National Southern Conference contest before a Saddleback homecoming crowd.

Pinned to its fifth straight loss, Grossmont (2-5, 0-3) could muster only 254 yards and one touchdown.

The offensive highlight for the Griffins was the kicking of Grossmont High graduate JORDAN REECE, who kicked field goals of 47 and 35 yards.

The Griffins’ lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run by freshman JAMARCUS FEDERICK (West Orange, Fla.).

It was a good day for the Grossmont kickers. Punter ALEX TEMPLETON (Poway) averaged 46.6 yards on five boots, landing two inside the 20-yard line. His long was 57 yards.

It was a rough evening for the quarterbacks. Starter MICHAEL CARRILLO (Christian) completed 11 of 27 for 108 yards, but was sacked 6 times.

TOMMY PISTONE (Yuma, Az) was 3 for 11 for 56 yards and suffered one interception.

Sure-handed CHRISTIAN BROOKS (Grossmont HS) was the Griffins’ leading receiver with 6 catches for 62 yards.

On the defensive side the Griffins surrendered 360 yards on 64 plays to Saddleback (5-2, 3-0).

Once again, blue chip linebacker NICK GALATIS (Clairemont) led with 8 tackles – one for loss and also had one sack.

Linebacker KALEB HARSTVEDT (Sault Ste Marie, Mi.) had 7 tackles, including 2 for loss.

Linebacker RUBEN LEASAU (Helix) had 5 tackles, including 2 for loss, while PHILLIP DIAZ DE LEON (Valhalla) had 5 stops with one for loss and a sack.

DEVAUGHN MURRAY (Mount Miguel) had 4 tackles and an interception.

Grossmont has three games remaining, including home games against Fullerton (Oct. 24) and Santa Ana (Nov. 7), both at 1 p.m., and an away game on the last day of the season at Orange Coast on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m.
