Griffins’ win over Coyotes nets dessert; Doonan wins weekly honor

EL CAJON – The Grossmont College women’s volleyball team’s march to the state championships continued Wednesday night, as the Griffins swept past cross-town foe Cuyamaca, 25-14, 25-11, 25-15, in a PCAC match.
After the match, Grossmont celebrated the victory with a team trip to a yogurt shop before heading home.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Hannah Doonan was named PCAC Female Player Of the Week, for the week ending Sunday.
Doonan, a 5-foot-11 freshman outside hitter from San Dimas High School, had a .464 kill percentage for the week as the Griffins, who are ranked No. 7 in the state and No. 5 in Southern California, defeated Imperial Valley 25-21, 25-13, 25-14 and Mesa 25-20, 25-14, 25-18.
Coach Jamie Iver’s team, which finished third in the 2014 state tournament, has won eight straight matches, seven via sweeps.
Doonan had a .429 hitting percentage in the victory over Mesa, with only two hitting errors.
Grossmont’s next match is Friday at Southwestern.
