Golden Eagles send Hawks home with loss in four

RIVERSIDE – The San Diego Christian women’s volleyball team fell in in four sets in a non-conference match against La Sierra on Tuesday night (22-25, 22-25, 25-12, 24-26).

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-6 on the season, while the Golden Eagles improve to 3-2.

Julianna Gutknecht scored the first point for the Hawks in Set 1 as SDC started the game in a 3-0 hole. The Hawks did storm back with a 7-3 run to take their first lead of the game at 7-6 thanks to an attacking error by LSU. Tied at 11-11, the Golden Eagles took the lead for good to hold on for the set win. SDC tied the set at 22-all with an Alexa Lambertkill, but LSU scored the last three points.

After a close start to Set 2, the Hawks finally saw some breathing room when they took a 14-11 lead. LSU, however, retook the lead at 15-14 and didn’t look back leading the rest of the way to take a 2-0 advantage.

A hot start was what the Hawks needed in Set 3, rolling out to a 5-2 lead. La Sierra later tied it 7-7 before SDC went on their biggest run of the match. The Hawks scored 11 straight points, first starting with two Juliana Gutknecht kills in a row. Aleka Estrada tallied three service aces in the run. Bevan Haskell ended the set with a kill to punctuate the set win.

Looking to avoid the loss in Set 4, SDC started on the right foot again, storming out to a 5-1 lead. The Hawks were leading the whole set until La Sierra finally tied it late at 22-22. After a brief LSU lead, the Hawks tied it again at 24-24, but the Golden Eagles finished the game on straight points to capture the win.

Gutknecht led the team with 12 kills, with Alli Beezer in a close second with 11. Molly Witzmann was next with six. Ashlyn Ridingled the team with 24 assists and Estrada added 14 digs.

The Hawks look to get back on track with a two-game GSAC trip to William Jessup on Friday followed by a match against Menlo on Saturday.

San Diego Christian lost 25-23,23-25,23-25,20-25 to The Master’s College

SANTEE– After taking the first set against The Master’s College, the San Diego Christian women’s volleyball team dropped the next three as the Mustangs defeated the Hawks 3-1, Saturday night (23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20) at Grossmont College.

With the loss, SDC falls to 5-5 on the season on 0-4 in GSAC play. The Mustangs improved to 11-5 on the season with a spotless 4-0 conference record.

Ten ties were accumulated in Set 1, with the Hawks getting the better end of it. Tied 14-14, SDC went on a 4-1 lead to take an 18-15 advantage. Juliana Gutknecht tallied a kill from an Ashlyn Riding pass to tie the game again at 22-22 before the Hawks scored three out of the last four points to claim the set.

Trailing for most of the second set, SDC went on an 8-3 run to take a 21-16 lead. Unforced errors by the Mustangs were most of the culprit in the run as a Gutknecht kill earned the Hawks the 21st point of the set. But Master’s went on an 9-2 run of their own to take the set.

A few ties in the beginning of the set gave way to The Master’s controlling most of the third set. With the score at 6-6, the Mustangs went on a 10-5 run. The Hawks would get as close as 24-23, but TMC scored the final point to take a 2-1 set lead.

The Hawks led for the majority of Set 4 until the Mustangs took a 15-14 lead and never looked back to capture the match victory.

Gutknecht led the charge with 11 kills and 13 digs. Riding, again, led the team in assists with 38. Aleka Estrada and Bevan Haskellwere the only ones who tallied assists. Haskell also led the team in blocks with seven.

The Hawks hit the road on Tuesday as they travel to La Sierra. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Riverside.

San Diego Christian loses 23-25,10-25,13-25 to (18) Westmont College
No. 18 Westmont Trips up SDC in three
EL CAJON – The No. 18 Westmont Warriors displayed their prowess as they defeated the San Diego Christian women’s volleyball team on Friday night in straight sets, 25-23, 25-10, 25-13.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-4 overall and 0-3 in GSAC play. The Warriors improve to 10-2 on the season and a spotless 3-0 in conference.

The Hawks’ lead was brief in the first set. A service ace by Juliana Gutknecht started the scoring off for SDC. Ashlyn Riding then registered a kill for a 2-0 lead.

The score was tied three times in the early going, 6-6, but the Warriors went on a 12-4 run to increase their lead to 18-10. Facing set point for Westmont, the Hawks stringed four straight points to make things interesting but the Warriors’ Marissa Fuerst ended the set with a kill.

The Warriors started off red-hot in Set 2, storming out to an 8-1 lead. A Riding kill gave the Hawks the lowest deficit of the game after the early run by Westmont at 12-5. The Warriors finished the set on a 13-5 run.

Down early in Set 3, 5-1, the Hawks scored five straight points o take a 6-5 lead. Alli Beezer tallied a kill off a Riding pass. The game went back and forth for the next five points. An attack error from Westmont squared the game at 11-11. The Warriors went on another big run, 9-2, to all but seal the match. The Hawks, after trailing 22-14, scored four straight points to make things interesting at the end. But the Warriors scored the last three points for the win.

Alexa Lambert led the Hawks with nine kills. Molly Witzmann was next with five. Riding contributed a team-high 18 assists. Witmann led the game with seven blocks.

SDC is back on the court Saturday as they host The Master’s College at 7 p.m. at the Santee Boys and Girls Club.
