RIVERSIDE (9-20-15) — A fast start and a swift finish wasn’t enough to permit visiting Grossmont College to knock off No. 1 ranked Riverside City College Saturday night (Sept. 19) at the Tigers’ den known as Wheelock Field.
The Griffins stormed to a 14-0 lead eight minutes into the game, only to have Riverside counter with 31 unanswered points heading into the final period.
The Tigers, who were upset by the Griffins when RCC was ranked No. 1 in the state a year ago, nearly saw Grossmont come back and steal the rematch.
Despite a 15-point burst in less than a minute in the fourth quarter, Grossmont succumbed to unbeaten Riverside 31-29.
A 35-yard punt return by TENEIL COOPER to the Tigers’ 11-yard line set the tempo for the Griffins’ fourth quarter charge.
Trailing at one time 31-14, the Griffins got off the floor on a 3-yard scoring run by JAMARCUS FEDERICK with 14:08 remaining. Quarterback TOMMY PISTONE completed a 2-point conversion pass to TYLER GUICE, cutting the deficit to 9 points.
A 41-yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker NICK GALATIS lifted the Griffins to within 3 points. JORDAN REECE kicked the extra point with 13:16 remaining. It was his 3rd PAT in as many attempts.
Grossmont attempted on onside kick and appeared to have made the recovery, but the officials saw it differently and called the Griffins offside.
“I don’t know how they could make that call,” fumed Griffins coach MIKE JORDAN. “The official farthest away from the play made the call, while the guy right in front of us on our sideline did not. How can that be?”
The Griffins would have three more possessions but were unable to move into field goal range down the stretch.
Grossmont (2-1) took an early 7-0 lead on a 4-yard scoring run by THOMAS McDONALD. Five minutes later SERGIO BAILEY hauled in a 51-yard TD strike from Pistone.
At that point there was plenty of excitement on the Grossmont sideline.
Due to an injury to sophomore QB MICHAEL CARRILLO, Pistone went the distance under center for the Griffins, completing 13 of 35 passes for 128 yards. He suffered two interceptions.
Bailey finished with 4 receptions for 79 yards, while McDonald pulled in 3 aerials for 21 yards.
CHRISTIAN BROOKS also caught 3 passes and returned 3 kickoffs for 125 yards.
Galatis, who previously earned Player of the Week in the SCFA Southern Conference, notched a game high 15 tackles including one for loss.
AIRRIC PARKER charted 10 tackles, KALEB HARSTVEDT pulled down 9 Tigers (8 of them solos), and DEVAUGHN MURRAY racked up 8 stops.
HUNTER CLARK had Grossmont’s only sack, and DERRELL WHITAKER returned an interception 44 yards to setup a Grossmont first quarter score.
“Of course we wanted to win, but it wasn’t disappointing that we lost,” said Jordan. “We played a very good football team. We didn’t win this time but I think we’re the best team in the state. If we play these guys again (in the playoffs) we’ll beat them.”
Late Reports – A broken down charter bus delivering Los Angeles Pierce College’s football team from Woodland Hills to Chula Vista’s Southwestern College caused Saturday night’s kickoff, scheduled for 6 p.m., to be eventually teed off at 8:37. The Jaguars left the field with a 23-20 victory at 11:30 p.m.
In another local game Palomar mauled San Diego Mesa 42-21.
