SPRING VALLEY (8-19-15) — The great thing about the opening of high school football in August is that everyone has a chance of making it to the CIF Championship game in December. The problem with September is that everyone realizes that they may not be getting to the championship game.
Hoover (1-0) has a great running back like Demontauz Gray, and he showed the Monarchs (0-1) how good he was in the second half. Like 152 yards just on his touchdown runs. For the game, Gray had five touchdowns totaling 155 yards.
After Monte Vista went three and out on their first drive of the year, Hoover ended up going just 20 yards on seven plays with the final three yards being ran in by Gray for the first score of the season and a 7-0 Cardinal lead.
The Cardinals extended that lead to a 10-0 advantage after a 41 yard field goal by David Arauz.
Monte Vista finally got some traction offensively as JACCOB JARDIM (seven carries for 39 yards and a touchdown) ran it in from 18 yards out to get the Monarchs on the board.
When the second quarter began, things were not looking good for the Monarchs. The Cardinals had just gotten off a great punt that pinned the Maroon and Gold deep, like their own two yard line, in their own end. Well, 18 plays and over 10 minutes off the clock later, TRE OWENS (63 yards rushing, 68 yards passing and three total touchdowns) fought for two hard earned yards and a Monte Vista 13-10 lead at the break.
The only issue was that there was still 24 minutes to go in the game.
In the second half, Gray scored four times for the above mentioned 152 yards. That included a 51 yard run on the second play of the half.
JOSE GONZALEZ lead the Monarch defense with six stops, including two for loss. CAMRYN BUTLER racked up three stops (two for loss) a quarterback hurry, pass breakup and a sack.
The Monarchs will try and bounce back next week when they travel to neighboring Steele Canyon (0-1) who lost to Torrey Pines on Friday.
