SANTEE, Calif. – Alejandra Gonzalez scored in the 25th minute and Samantha Schmidt added insurance in the 86th as the San Diego Christian Women’s Soccer team won their season-opener against La Verne 2-0 Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Hawks have now won 3-straight season openers, all shutout victories.
The Leopards dropped their season-opener.
In the early going, La Verne threatened to score first. A shot by Carlee Chien was saved by SDC keeper Katherine Koury in the 4th minute. The Hawks also had chances to break the scoreless tie with four shots in a 13 minute span, but all were saved or went wide of the goal before Gonzalez scored the first goal of the game. Gonzalez brought the ball down from her chest off a cross from Vivian Oray to slide it past the Leopard goalie for the 1-0 lead.
For the next 20 minutes, La Verne was the only team to register a shot. Tatiana Raygoza’s attempt went wide in the 41st minute as the Hawks took the 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The Hawks held a slight edge in shots in the second half, 5-4, but put that extra one to good use with Schmidt’s goal in the 86th minute.
Katherine Day led the team with three shots, two of which were on goal. Koury registered three saves in the 90-minute shutout.
SDC’s next game will come on the road as they travel to Claremont-Mudd on Sept. 1 with a kickoff starting at 7 p.m.
