EL CAJON (6-7-15) — Competition in the East County this season was almost too close to measure.
Not that the local teams dominated anything in particular, as no team from the Inland Empire reached the semifinals except for Christian, which went on to take the San Diego Section Division III championship with a 29-2 record.
Undefeated in the Central League, the Patriots hit .414 (53-for-128) as a team in the playoffs.
Chistian’s MIKE MITCHELL was tabbed Coach of the Year.
The list of post-season awards were widespread after that. Helix pitcher-corner infielder LEE MUTTER was tabbed the EastCountySports.com Player of the Year, and Grossmont sophomore JACKSON HULETT was anointed Rookie of the Year.
Granite Hills pitcher KENNY LA PIERRE was named the Most Improved Player in balloting by the EastCountySports.com staff.
Christian outfielder JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD, who finished on a blazing hitting streak, came out of the shadows to earn Unsung Hero honors.
